20 games that sold over 20 million

Last week it was announced that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim had achieved 20 million sales since its launch in November 2011 – an average of 25,000 copies a day!

20 million represents a huge number of purchases, raising the question: which other games have shifted that many copies? It makes for quite an interesting list…

Wii Sports – 82.98m

As you’d expect from a title that came bundled with pretty much every Wii console, Wii Sports is easily the best selling videogame of all time. Kids and grandmothers the world over went mental for the mini game collection which was designed to help users get to grips with the console’s new motion controls.

Super Mario Bros – 40.24m

Super-Mario-Bros-Screensaver_3

The second highest selling video game of all time is probably no surprise seeing as it’s ingrained in many of our childhoods. It was also the original pack in game for the NES.

Tetris – 35m

It’s worth noting this is just the Game Boy and Game Boy Colour versions and does not include other iterations or rip offs. The Russian sensation still sells today in some form or another, and is even getting a shiny next-gen 1080p release this year.

Mario Kart Wii – 34.29m

DZdn1NB7wZ3FauR10GNVMJDDbnfgukFq

The sixth Mario Kart game introduced several changes to the series, and became the game of choice for many a drunken evening with friends. As well as introducing bikes to the mix, the game was also responsible for millions of silly plastic “Wii Wheels” cluttering up living rooms everywhere.

Minecraft – 33m

Mojang’s block based indie sandbox title is well on its way to taking over the world and is yet to release on next gen consoles. Don’t be surprised to see that number continue to grow at a pretty rapid rate as creepers become our new overlords.

Wii Sports Resort – 31.89m

Just as the original Wii Sports helped launch the Wii, it’s follow up Wii Sports resort helped launch the bundled MotionPlus addon. With 12 new events designed to showcase the more accurate controls, Resort expanded your granny’s repertoire everything from archery to table tennis.

Pokemon Red/Blue/Green –31.37m

The first instalments in the hugely successful series is also the biggest selling. Originally featuring 151 Pokemon to catch, the series now boasts over 600 of the little chaps. The 1999 follow ups Gold & Silver also sold over 20 million (23.1m)

New Super Mario Bros. – 30.38m

super-mario-brothers

Mario’s long awaited return to his side scrolling roots sold like hot cakes on the DS when it released in 2006. Since then, Mario side scrollers have appeared on all of Nintendo’s subsequent platforms; notably the Wii version also sold over 20 million copies (27.88 mil)

Grand Theft Auto 5 – 29.68m

gta-5

Rockstar’s psychopath simulator broke multiple records upon release last year, reaching $1 Billion in sales in just three days, becoming the fastest entertainment property to do so. With rumours of an upcoming PC version and possible next gen release, expect this number to grow.

Wii Play – 28.78m

This weak minigame compilation sold mainly due to the fact it came bundled with an extra Wii controller and cost less than a controller on its own.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – 28.46m

Infinity Ward’s all-action blockbuster marks the series’ peak in sales, if not in storytelling; many fans consider it to be the worst in the series with a Michael bay style bombastic storyline.

Duck Hunt – 28.31m

Duck-Hunt1

Another pack in title for the NES ( I see a pattern forming here). The light gun shooting game sold bucketloads due to the fact it was the only good game out for the NES Zapper and at the time, the technology seemed like it had beamed in several hundred years from the future.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – 27.5m

Grand-Theft-Auto-San-Andreas-875

The second best selling GTA game currently sits just ahead of GTA IV (25m) and benefits from being released on pretty much every platform (even your mobile phone). Considered by many to be the most controversial in the series, it’s also regarded as one of the best.

Call of Duty: Black Ops – 26.8m

call-of-duty-black-ops-trailer

The second highest selling Call of Duty title is also regarded as one of the strongest. Treyarch’s Black Ops switched up the setting and tweaked the multiplayer just enough to keep the fervent fan base happy. Actually, who are we kidding? It’s blasting Nazi zombies with your mates that keeps people coming back.

Nintendogs 23.94m

Nintendogs_Dachshund_and_Friends_(NA)

Yet another Nintendo franchise to make the list. The real time pet simulator for the DS has several different versions dependant on the breed of dog you’d like to virtually groom. It’s also the second highest selling DS title behind NSMB, despite no-one admitting to ever having played it.

Mario Kart DS – 23.34m

1427

Mario Kart DS was the first in the series to include online multiplayer, allowing players to race their friends over the internet on a handheld. While this was a huge deal at the time, the lack of voice chat meant your frustrated screams after being hit by a blue shell went largely unheard.

Wii Fit – 22.67m

wii-fit-21532-1024x600

Nintendo’s fitness game took the world by storm. Fatties everywhere rushed (well, waddled) to their local game store to track down the elusive balance board. The sequel Wii Fit Plus also makes the list, selling 20.88m

Super Mario World – 20.60m

supermarioworldf

Easily the biggest selling SNES title due to it being a pack-in title at launch, Super Mario World was the plumbers’ début on the Super Nintendo. Re-released several times, the game is often noted as one of the most innovative of the Mario series.

Kinect Adventures – 20.5m

kinect-adventures1_1764307b

Yet another title that benefited from being bundled in with hardware. Every single Kinect sensor came with a copy of this mini game collection which means it’s sadly the 360′s biggest selling title. Featuring such activities as plugging a leaky wall and bursting balloons, we’ve come a long way from that initial 360 launch lineup of Call of Duty 2, Ridge Racer VI and Condemned.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – 20m

skyrim-249651

The fifth game in Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls series released to massive critical acclaim in 2011. The action RPG may have had its problems at launch (particularly on PS3), but it still regarded as one of the finest games of the generation.

As you’ve probably noticed, Nintendo pretty much dominates the list. Their canny ability to choose pack-in titles that have widespread appeal has no doubt played a huge part in their sales success. While it’s interesting to see a couple of Call of Duty games make the list, you have to wonder if that’ll be the case for future versions – especially after the fan and media response to Ghosts.

What do you think of the list? Were there any surprises for you? How many do you own?
